Fan worms (also known as feather dusters or polychaet worms) make a wonderful and colourful addition to the home aquarium. Each worm has a crown of tentacles used for feeding purposes that catch fine particles of organic matter like phytoplankton and bacteria suspended in the water column.

These feather like tentacles have an important and specific role to play in the worms survival, but in the home aquarium they can provide a unique and colourful spectacle. Brown and white feathers are commonly available but we also stock pink & white and yellow varieties.

Fan worms do well in a moderate to high current of water, lighting is immaterial to their health, the main problem for the aquarist is the threat from aggressive tank mates that may try and eat them.

Wrasses, copperband butterflies and hermit crabs may be tempted to peck and eat them, to combat this threat the fan worm builds a parchment-like tube to protect it’s soft body, that it can retract back into in the blink of an eye, as a final means of defence against predators the fan worm can drop it’s feather crown and regrow it again over time.

We also stock hard tube worms (Coco worms), these worms have a hard calcium tube to live in and usually a pink & white or red & white feather crown at their head. These particular worms need a regular supply of calcium and phytoplankton to sustain themselves, with the right care these creatures make an extremely attractive addition to your home aquarium.
